Mild Steel Wire: A Versatile Material

Mild Steel Wire

Many industrial products need steel which exhibits properties like higher flexibility and Ductility. This allows the metal to be stretched into thin wires or other shapes without breaking. The usability of mild steel is undeniable in today’s industrial era, and mild steel wire manufacturers leverage its properties to meet the rising demand for mild steel. It exhibits properties like formability, weldability, etc., and is widely used across heavy and medium industries.

Composition of Mild Steel Wires

Stainless steel is highly corrosion-resistant whereas Mild Steel wires are highly prone to corrosion. The low cost and high formability of Mild Steel Wire. The low amount of carbon in the MS steel increases its ductility and adaptability. Mild Steel Wires are used in the manufacturing of general-purpose engineering products like needles, safety pins, steel wools, nuts, bolts, screws, rivets, chassis, bumpers, body panels, decorative items, etc. MS steel material is also used for the construction of different architectural fabrications and general engineering purposes.

Difference between Mild Steel and Plain Steel:

Steel is usually less malleable and much harder.  Mild steel on the other hand is much less brittle than other steels. Steel is more resistant when it comes to corrosion. Mild steel can be used for strengthening through the addition of carbon. Steel is coated to make it corrosion-resistant while mild steel is low-carbon content steel which is highly prone to corrosion.

Types of Mild Steel Wires:

Based on its various properties, mild steel is classified into three grades. Here are the most common kinds of mild steel wires used in the manufacturing industries:

1. Commercial Grade-

This Grade of Mild steel is manufactured by mild steel wire manufacturers across India in high volumes. These MS steel wires are widely available for general-purpose applications such as nut bolts, nails, commercial screws, weld mesh, etc. Commercial-grade MS Wire is relatively soft and easy to bend and used for applications where quality is not a concern.

2. Drawing Grade-

This is a higher quality wire than commercial-grade mild steel wire. Drawing grade wire is manufactured by drawing the mild steel wire through a series of dies and rotating drums, which results in a smoother and more uniform wire. Drawing-grade MS Wire is stronger and more durable than commercial-grade MS Wire. Drawing-grade wires are commonly used in making wire mesh.

3. High Tensile Strength Grade-

The strongest and most durable type of Mild steel wire is high-tensile grade wire. It is made by adding alloy elements like carbon, manganese, silicon, and Boron to the steel. High tensile strength grade MS wire has a much higher yield strength than commercial grade and drawing grade MS Wire, making it ideal for use in heavy-duty applications. It is commonly used in wire ropes, automotive screws, construction, and other high-stress applications where high strength and durability are required.

Applications of Mild Steel Wires:

Construction Industry:

Mild steel wires are commonly used in creating reinforced concrete structures, such as bridges, buildings, and dams. Mild steel Wire is used as a binding wire for reinforcement bars and is also used in precast concrete structures, making them stronger and more durable.

Manufacturing Industry:

Mild steel wire is used extensively in manufacturing to create a variety of products, including wire mesh, nails, screws, and bolts. Its high tensile strength makes it ideal for use in these products, ensuring that they can withstand high levels of stress and pressure.

Automobile Industry:

MS wire is used in the automotive industry to create parts such as springs and brake cables. Its high tensile strength and durability make it an ideal choice for these applications.

Agriculture:

MS wire is used to make strong and reasonably priced fencing for baling, support for climbing plants, crop protection, and livestock enclosures.

Conclusion:

After stainless steel, mild steel wires are one of the most widely used steel products. Bansal Wires is one of the most reliable mild steel wire manufacturers across the globe.  Mild steel wires manufactured by various manufacturers serve as the raw material for GI wire. Galvanized Iron Wire is created by applying a zinc coating on carbon Mild steel Wire. It has high tensile strength and durability as compared to the Mild steel wire, making it an excellent choice for use in construction, manufacturing, automotive, and electrical applications.
